Fall Meeting: Buffalo Presbyterian Church and David Caldwell
The Society returns to Greensboro for our Fall Meeting on Saturday, October 12, 2024! We’ll begin with registration at the Greensboro History Museum, the former home of First Presbyterian Church, which offers a fascinating look into the Gate City’s rich history.
Buffalo Presbyterian Church
Founded in 1756 - before the founding of Greensboro, North Carolina, and the United States - Buffalo Presbyterian Church has been a cornerstone of the community for nearly 270 years. The church’s first minister was the remarkable David Caldwell, who served for 55 years.
David Caldwell: Educator, Minister, Physician, Patriot
David Caldwell was a Princeton graduate who became the most important educator south of the Potomac during the Revolutionary period. He was:
- Minister at both Buffalo and Alamance Presbyterian churches
- Educator with about 50 students annually at his famous log college
- Teacher of 33 future academy presidents, 135 ministers, 50 U.S. and NC senators, and six governors
- A physician, farmer, and astute politician
- A fervent patriot married to Rachel Craighead
Buffalo was an “old side” congregation while Alamance (founded 1764) adopted the “new side” enthusiastic worship style influenced by the Great Awakenings. Rev. Caldwell saw no religious problem with serving both.
Program
Dr. Carole Troxler will present “Rachel Caldwell Remembers David,” following Don McLeod’s thumbnail sketch of this extraordinary figure. Rev. Caldwell is buried in Buffalo’s cemetery.
